49cc Honda Ruckus?
« on: 07/15/09 12:14AM »
I was thinking of getting one...  Been researching tonight and it seems I should get an 06+ due to it being 3 mph faster with less problems or something.  I'm also considering the Honda Metropolitan because of the "Classic Look".  The main purpose is to ride it 4 miles down Redhill to Macarthur to Campus for work.  Not sure if I can make it up that hill on Macarthur and Main though...  Does anyone have any experience with one of these?

I don't, but I've heard the Ruckus is a tough, reliable little guy.  I say get one!

Not with this particular Scooter but I had a 250cc and feel like it's needed to safely ride through Socal traffic.  I'd say go test ride one and see if it accelerates quick enough.

For 4mi, I would really take a bicycle though.  Very cheap and you get some exercise in the process.

I have a bicycle but I can't get to work all sweaty...  I would take my gsxr, but putting on all the gear (jacket, helmet, gloves) to go 4 miles seems excessive...  It's stupid but I would only be wearing a helmet on the scooter.

For a $1500 investment, I really don't lose much.  =T

If your not going to be wearing your gear on the scooter why not just take your gsxr and leave the gear at home. at least your 600 accelerates fast enough to get out of the way. I think the 49cc scooter is way more dangerous

Next time I'm in SD, I'm going to borrow my sister's Zuma with brembo brakes and a 70cc kit to see how fast it is...  She uses it when she's at the track to scoot around and get looks from boys.  =(

I would agree with the statement above. If you're not planning on wearing gear while riding the rucus, save your $$$ and ride your gsxr without gear.  Just because your on a smaller CC bike doesn't mean the injuries are going to be less if you're involved in an accident. Just my .02

Great.  Full leathers on the scooter are going to look awesome.  =)

I'd probably squid it on the bike then.  The only upside of the Scooter is that you generally don't get under it when you fall.

The Ruckus is over priced and slow, I would not ride one on blvd's or Ave's.  The main problem is it's a 50cc 4 stroke.  Most 50cc scooters are 2 stroke and can make WAY more power.  I would not get a 4 stroke scooter under 125cc's.  You can get a Yamaha Vino (50cc 2 stroke) and kit that thing out so it will do over 60mph (limiting reliability of course).

The Ruckus looks cool but that's all it has going for it.

Benefit's of scooters over motorcycles:
1.  No clutch
2.  Storage compartments
3.  Up to 70 mpg
4.  Inexpensive

There are of course down sides to scooters mostly being:
1.  They are not the coolest thing on the road
2.  Depending on what you get they can be very slow.

Having ridden one in traffic for a while, the main advantage I found was comfort since the riding position is like sitting on a comfortable chair and you have no clutch to deal with.  The main disadvantage was power; even on a 250cc, you don't nearly have as much power as on a bike, so in a sense it's even harder to safely ride it in traffic.

The rest is all relative:
* storage; I just use a backpack now
* mileage.  I got 65-70mpg but probably get 50mpg on the bike.  So, pretty negligible $$ wise
* inexpensive: that's kind of relative too.  Buying a higher cc scooter, is just as much as an entry level bike.

My opinion: they are really more designed to roll around in busy European cities and are less suited for the US (unless maybe to putz around downtown).

Thanks R69S... That's the info I needed.

I'll still researching...  The zuma is another option for me, but I like the look of the ruckus more.  I think the biggest thing is test riding one to see if I like it.

It's not a money issue, it's the fun factor.  I think it would be a different type of experience than the regular moto...

That's the thing...  I don't want to ride the nice bike to work or drive the nice car.  I drive a 96 green corolla with a ripped off side molding and a dirtbag scooter would match.  =)
