The older I get, the less enthusiastic I get from all the crowded places in SoCal.  I'm especially tired of our SoCal beaches that are overcrowded and overpriced and overdeveloped.  So I went for a long drive and found a perfect hidden beach that only a few locals know about.  And parking was FREE!

We spent a day here and there was a total of ONE person walked by.  The sand was "virgin" with only our feet making impressions.

Check out the windblown sand!  Untouched by anybody else.

Tide pools!

Did I mention parking was free?  Drive right on the dirt embankment and the sandy beach is right there.  Don't have to fight for a spot.  There is no parking toll.  Too narrow for motorhomes!  And they won't allow overnight motorhome parking anyway.

Yeah that's a sunset on a California beach.  And yeah there was nobody else there spoiling the view!

SoCal is pretty deep into Autumn now so the mornings are chilly, the days are warm, and the evenings are chilly again.  The weather was great, clear with a little chill in the air-enough to keep it too hot.  Iíd taken Robert up to Crystal Lake, jeez, a year ago, but he hadnít seen GMR so we took it easy and just cruised to the top.  Then down the back side, through Azusa then off to East Fork Supply for their coffee and donuts, courtesy of Black Top Society.

Nice bikes. Love your Monster.

Now is a great time to ride weather wise. Not too cold and not hot either.

Impressive!  How would you rate it's overall reliability?  I've always wanted a Monster but was always worried about it's long term reliability.  I'd like to get an old school M900 just to tinker with.

My VFR just went over the 50k mile mark and I just replaced its clutch and about to replace the water pump, which started leaking last week.  The clutch was making some weird noises.  Also had to clean my fuel injectors because they started acting up from being dirty.  I replaced my stator 6k miles ago.  Other than these the bike has been very reliable.

the electricals tend to be garbage, that's the only thing that's ever really left me stranded.  MOSFET rectifier solves a lot of problems.  I should've bought one after the first rectifier died.

Definitely not unique to the 'cati either. My Kawasaki and older Hondas are the same way; stock regulators are just not great.

I think i'm on my 3rd replacement rectifier, plus the one that died under warranty.  2nd stator.

all that was pretty minor compared to the dash frying and completely killing the bike.  Had to get a new dash and the ECU flashed.

Well, I think stators and rectifiers are "wear items" on most, if not all bikes.  I believe that if you plan to keep a bike over 40k miles, replace their stators and maybe their rectifiers before the 50k miles rolls around.  The VFR forums are littered with Stator/Rectifier issues, how-to, preventative, etc.,  Since the VFR owners in general keep their bikes a long time, these issues frequently pop up more often on internet forums.  Late model VFR's usually will need a new stator any time after 40k miles.  When a stator/rectifier fails, you won't know for a while that your electrical system is being overloaded until something just melts, pops, or dies.

It's good to know that your M900 is still running strong with just the usual electrical stuff that needed to be sorted.

I'm a little behind, but I went riding on Black Friday:

http://twoslow.com/2017/11/black-friday-2017/

Black Friday.  Ugh.  One of the days a year we only hear about the worst of our humanity.  I make it habit to go riding on this day to get away from the TV and insanity.  Jon and I havenít gone on a ride in a long time, and I hadnít seen him and Adell since their wedding so I really wanted to connect and catch up with them.  Theyíd never been to Pappy and Harrietís, so I decided Iíd take them for lunch to check it out.

Hard to see but that sign says 7,000 feet.

Looked like a great Black Friday ride.  I've been wanting to visit Pioneer Town.  Probably best not to go there on a weekend though.

Great pictures.

Did a bunch of maintenance, and added some effects.

Adjusted exhaust valve clearance... Reference photo for reassembly...

Effects... Lights glow red under brakes.
