BMW recalls - K1200*, R1200*
« on: 08/15/10 07:38PM »
I usually only post recalls for bikes I know we have here, but I'm not familiar with the BMW nomenclature so here it is:

Models:  2007-2008 K1200GT, 2007-2009 R1200GS, 2007-2009 R1200GS Adventure, 2007-2009 R1200R, 2007-2009 R1200RT, 2007 R1200ST

Component:  Service Brakes, Hydraulic
Potential number of units affected:  15,532

Summary:  BMW is recalling certain model year 2007 through 2009 R1200 and K1200 series motorcycles manufactured from August 2006 through May 2009.  Due to the current routing of the front brake lines, it is possible that during riding, and therefore associated vibration, the brake lines could be under strain.  If the vibration/strain is significant, the brake line could split and start to develop a leak.

Consequence:  If this goes unnoticed, and the brake fluid reservoir runs empty, the front brakes could fail, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy:  BMW will notify owners and dealers will installed new brake lines that contain a sleeve along a portion of the lines, free of charge.  The safety recall is expected to begin during July 2010.  Owners may contact BMW at 800-525-7417

NHTSA campaign ID number: 10v276000

or it could be the material used for brake lines was kaka.  I went to the NHTSA website and couldn't find info on this...can you post a link?  I'm curious.

I got it from Sept 2010 Motorcycle Consumer News.

I realized I mistyped the NHTSA number:  10v276000

yeah, "could"  :37:

Remedy:
BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW BRAKE LINES, CONTAINING A "SLEEVE" ALONG A PORTION OF THE LINES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING AUGUST 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417
I don't know, smells like BS to me.  How could a R/D department and engineers not anticipate vibrations for a loose hydraulic line.   :26:   I wouldn't even expect this from one of those Korean or Indian made motorcycles, let alone a BMW.

But then again, I clicked on this thread because on other forums I've read about repeated defects on certain BMW models and I was curious as to "what now".
