Ride to the Flags 9/11 memorial ride
« on: 08/29/10 08:38PM »
Hey OCMoto friends, I just recieved this email, and I thought I'd share it with you.

Moderators, please put this on the calendar.

I did this ride a couple years ago, and let me tell you, it was amazing! nearly 4000 bikes parading down malibu canyon. There were a couple celebrities, but the only one that stood out (for me) was Pink.

Here's the text of the email.

We hope this email finds you well.

The 3rd Annual Ride to the Flags (RTTF) will be held this year on Saturday, 9/11/10 from the Naval Base Ventura County - Pt. Mugu to Pepperdine University.

The Gary Sinise Charitable Foundation is organizing the ride with 100% of the funds collected going to Snowball Express, Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, and the Stephen Siller FDNY Children's Foundation.

We would love to see everyone there.  If you have friends that ride, or if you ride with a motorcycle club, please invite them to join as well.  There is a PDF flyer available for download on our website now - www.RideToTheFlags.com

Some order of business -

Registration for the event will NOT be at Naval Base Ventura County - Pt. Mugu - instead it will be held off the base at an elementary school 2 miles away.

The school is Laguna Vista Elementary School located at 5084 Etting Rd. in Oxnard, 93033

We will begin registration at 9am. and close at 11am.  WE WILL NOT TURN BIKERS AWAY IF THERE IS A LINE AFTER 11am

It is important that you get to registration, register, and head to the Naval Base.  We are expecting a lot of motorcycles for this ride so please make it easy on us and let the volunteers direct you through the registration process.  There is no minimum donation this year - we trust that you will give generously.  It will be telling sign to see, when given the option to give any amount they would like, how patriotic and giving our two-wheeled brethren can be.  Well...I guess trikes can be patriotic and giving too...

We've had 108 troops KIA since the beginning of July.  Hundreds wounded.  They have given so much for us - let us do our part.

You will receive two things at check-in.  For starters you will receive a Ride to the Flags patch.  Secondly, you will receive a Ride to the Flags TyVek wristband that will go on your right wrist.  YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED TO THE NAVAL BASE WITHOUT THIS WRISTBAND.  After receiving these items, hightail it to the base - there is probably a line of people behind you waiting to register.

Or so we hope...

There will be plenty of volunteers directing you to the base from the registration parking lot - LET THE VOLUNTEERS DIRECT YOU.  We have specific instructions for entry from the Naval Base.  Let them show you the way - we are NOT entering in the main gate - we will have to head one exit down on the highway and enter from another gate.  There will be people at intersections and main turning points so you don't get lost.

DO NOT BRING GUNS, KNIVES, DRUGS, ETC ONTO THE NAVAL AIR STATION!  ...or the school for that matter...

It's 9/11 - you're on a military base.

We will have base personnel at registration as well as police dogs and wands at the staging area.  Please be smart and leave all forbidden and questionable items at home.  Don't worry, you can still wear your bracelets and chain-driven wallets - this is not the base's concern.

Once you enter the gates at the Pt. Mugu you will be directed by base security on where to park.

After you park, there will be coffee for everyone courtesy of the Red Cross.  Please enjoy.

There will be a taco truck if you are hungry.  This is your cost.  This whole ride was put together to maximize the donations to the non-profits.  That is our primary concern.   Everything we have afforded was an expense that was donated by an MC or individual so that we can keep the event overhead down and ensure that 100% of what you give goes to these charities.  Each dollar we would have spent on tacos was a dollar that we couldn't give to the charities.  So please know that this is your expense.

We will have a live band and I will announce the band in a couple of days.

Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, CSI:NY) will be on base and speaking to the bikers at the pre-ride ceremonies.  Most of our event will happen at the Naval Base - a celebration of freedom, if you will.  Our ride will embody the beauty this country has to offer and we will end with a short ceremony at Pepperdine University with bagpipes to pay proper tribute to those who lost their lives on that day and who have lost their lives since defending our freedoms.

A special note regarding the ride:

This is NOT a ride for new riders.  We are heading through some pretty tight-turning terrain in the canyon.  Also, It's beautiful.  No doubt.  Keep your eyes on the road.

This ride will be fully escorted by local law-enforcement.

...but for those who may be uncomfortable with the canyon riding but still want to ride to Pepperdine via another route that is okay.  We will have a platoon of bikes that will head down PCH all the way to Pepperdine University.  However, that ride will NOT be escorted.  Rules of the road will apply for those who take the PCH route.

For those of you interested in celebrities for this ride there will be plenty.  They will be wearing the uniform of our U.S. military and they will be everywhere.

We do, however, have awesome military-supporting hollywood-types riding with us, such as Lorenzo Lamas, Dr. Laura, Kristy Swanson, D.B. Sweeney, Jack Scalia and plenty more.

So PLEASE go to the website (www.ridetotheflags.com) and download the flyer and get your friends to come!  We want a great turnout!  We don't want to make Lt. Dan angry.

Have you ever seen Lt. Dan angry?  No...and you don't want to...

Let's ride.

All the best,

Ryan Sawtelle

P.S. Any questions concerning check-in, staging at Pt. Mugu, or the memorial at Pepperdine, please email me at RyanSawtelle@mac.com  - any questions pertaining to the actual ride itself, please direct to the Lead Ride Captain, John "Hooter" Nanney at jnanney@roadrunner.com - he will LOVE to hear from you.  He really isn't that busy.

He-heh, Lieutenant Dan  :)

It's been a few weeks since I've been there. Shelly was asking about a memorial ride, I think this is a good one.

I'm guessing not...

from their website:

Quote
We will not provide ride t-shirts.  Everything given to the riders will be donated items.

Every dollar that would be spent designing and purchasing a t-shirt could be one more dollar towards helping our men and women in uniform.

If you are looking for a ride that will give you free stuff, there are many of those out there.  This isn’t it.

J- This is a completely different ride. This one is a much larger ride,  leaves from Point Mugu and ends in Malibu at Pepperdyne. I may make the trip from Wyoming for this one.

Jeff, that's a different ride like Casey said. This one is an escorted ride that goes through Malibu canyons and doesn't end at a fireman's house. It's also through Lieutenant Dan's charity  :)

Spoke with Kyle tonight, he's wussing out of this one because Point Mugu's "too far". Looks like I'll be making this ride by myself.
