Tioga Pass Run, October 1-3, 2010
« on: 09/22/10 02:25PM »
Tioga Pass Run... :7:
For anyone that thought Lake Tahoe was too long, this is the condensed version.
Refer to http://ocmoto.com/index.php?topic=23240.0 from the last adventure.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Due to the extreme elevation of this trip and our late season timing it is totally weather dependent. If there is any hint of rain, it will definitely be snowing in the pass meaning that the trip will be called off. We will carefully monitor the weather and make a call in enough time to cancel our hotels and get a refund.

What it is:
The Tioga Pass is a mountain pass that is highest road in California at just under 10,000 feet and offers extremely beautiful scenery and has been called one of the most scenic routes in all of California. Our route will takes us right over the route along with Mono Lake, Lake Isabella and the mountains through Oakhurst. The trip will take 2.5 days with the first two days covering roughly 300 miles each and 350 miles (to Long Beach) the last day.

When:
October 1-3, 2010. 11am sharp.
Chevron
22220 Wilmington Ave
Carson, CA

The route should be visible here:

Day 1: October 1st
Leave at 12:00 noon from a location somewhere in Long Beach. We can make a secondary meet spot as well for those coming from different directions. Drive to Bakersfield, over the pass to Lake Isabella, over more mountains and down to the 395. Overnight in Lone Pine for pizza and beer. Distance is 295 miles.

Day 2: October 2nd
Leave Lone Pine in the AM and head north to the 6 then the big rollers on the 120 to Lee Vining. Lunch at the worlds nicest gas station restaurant (yes really) and then over the pass stopping along the way to enjoy the scenery and take some photos. This area definitely has lots of twisties but the pace will probably be a bit slow through here due to traffic and scenery soakage. The pass hooks up to the 49 which is a fun twisty road into Oakhurst where we overnight again. Distance is 305 miles.

Day 3: October 3rd
Return home. However instead of slogging home over the 99 and the 5 freeway we will head through on the 41 and then hook up the 33. It will take awhile but the 33 eventually gets very twisty and takes us into Ventura. From there it can either be the 101 to your homes or along the coast through Malibu if we want to change it up. Distance is 350 miles (to Long Beach).

The Pace:
For the most part we will cruise at 5 to 10 mph over the speed limit or just match the pace of traffic on the transit/freeway sections. We will pick up the pace sometimes in twisties for fun but won't be anything too crazy. The most important thing is to ride at your own pace. We will wait at any turns or intersections where someone could get lost for people to catch up. Dont feel pressured to keep up or ride over your head as we would much rather wait for you than have a crash.

Who this ride is for:
Anyone who is somewhat comfortable in the twisties and spending 6 to 8 hours and 300 plus miles a day on their bike. Also please have your bike in good working condition as there is only so much we can do for you if there is a mechanical failure. The main point of this ride is to have fun and see some beautiful backcountry so working on bikes is not high on the list. Also if you are a drama queen, high-maintenance or just an ass please dont come.

What to expect and bring:
Expect moderate temperatures in the 60s. However the pass will be colder as we will get to altitude (think mid 40s to 50s) so layering and windproofing is good. This is only part of the second day though shouldnt be horrible. A small tool kit for your bike is always a good idea along with a spare key and possibly a tire patch kit. Inform your credit card company that you are going on a trip otherwise they will shut off your card from all the refueling. Cash is good too in case credit cards dont work.

Lodging:
Friday Night (October 1st)
Best Western Frontier Motel
1008 S Main Street
Lone Pine, CA 93545
760-876-5571
www.bestwesterncalifornia.com

Looks like $99 a night if you are an AAA member. Not sure if additional discount applies for AA members.

Saturday Night (October 2)
Days Inn
40662 Highway 41
Oakhurst, CA 93644
559-642-2525
www.daysinn.com

Looks like $105 a night and $125 a night. Not sure of the difference.

Both towns have plenty of hotel options but it is a lot easier if we all stay at the same hotel! I suggest coordinating to share rooms and split costs. Craig likes to spoon though so be advised.

Moderators:  Calendar Please.

No plans to....would rather avoid the 395 and get on the 120. Plus we will get plenty of scenery going over the pass.

Do not worry we will definitely share rooms....right now there are 4 of us...I really prefer my own bed so 2 rooms at each stop is good unless more people join in...
