I think if you're cited for 15+ MPH over the speed limit you can't do traffic school.  I've experienced and heard of several instances though where the cop will write you up just low enough so you can take traffic school.  theman, I think you might need to show up to court and ask for the traffic school.
Wow...80? Seriously? I do 80 regularly on the freeways (91 every day). Bout the same speed as everyone else (besides traffic). Maybe I should go slower than everyone else and cause more traffic by having everybody try and pass me.
Tell me about it. I sometimes take my bike to work. I go 91 west at about 4:50 - 5:00 am. I cruise at 80mph (at least) and I still get passed.
I always have to check my mirrors because I get at least 2 or 3 CHP bikes that fly by me, they must be doing 100mph. All you see after that is the blue tail lights of their bikes fad away.

Oh just a side note. two days before I got my ticket i was on the 91 East on the same 91 toll road. A bike CHP drove passed me. I waived and he waived back. About 3 seconds later his radar gun falls off his bike right in front of me. My front tire ran over the cord. I hit the gas to catch up to him to let him know but he was already stopping. We both pulled over but he flipped a bitch and was able to get right in to the 91 west bound toll lane to try and circle back.
When I was first getting pulled over on Monday I thought it was that same cop.... BUT i was wrong.

I was going 120ish, I saw the CHP and started to down shift... he caught me at 91mph.  Wrote the ticket for 80 in a 70... Still expensive as hell...   :44:
Your bike must be fast, cuz you were haulin' ass when I passed you!!

Writing these nonsense tickets (for a few miles over the speed limit) is only to help (1) fund these overbloated departments, (2) pay for their entitlement retirement programs and (3) any money left over goes into Calif general fund.

Your fine will state whether traffic school is an option and the cost.  A violator can call the court and pay the fine with the clerk. The court will then mail the traffic school info to you.  Remember, the 18 month period starts the day you complete traffic school.  So it's best to attend this course ASAP.

this is what I hate.  WE all know that 75 to 80 mph is pretty much the flow of traffic on the freeways but the cops can pull you over even if you go with the flow of traffic and you can't fight it because technically the sign says 65 is speed limit even when everybody is going 75

This begs a question or two.

Which lane?  Fast lane, slow lane, or in between?

From what I've experienced. All lanes haha.  I mean if you don't believe me,  get on the freeways.  Only one or two cars or so drive eaither too slow or rtoo fast. Most of the cars drive around 70- mph to 80.  So do the cops pick and choose? Profiling? When I took my dmv class to get my license back in the days I always thought going with the flow of traffic is a good thing.

This is why speed limits are set to the 85th percentile speed of free flowing traffic. It's unfortunate (and unsafe) that most states do not apply the 85th percentile speed rule to freeways, causing safe drivers to be ticketed and punished.

It's been my experience that traffic flows more quickly in some places than it does in others.  The South Bay Curve versus the 5 at San Onofre are good examples.  It seems to run at about 75 in most places.  There's usually a 10 to 15 mph variance between the lanes.

I've found that the CHP tends to pluck their victims from the fast and diamond lanes, so I avoid those.  I've also noticed that the more noticeable you are, the more you get noticed.  The CHP has noticed that and gives the noticeable more attention, so I try to avoid being noticed.
