OCMOT USER CHAT POLL & THOUGHTS
« on: 04/10/08 09:01AM »
so theres to discussions about a user chat feature:
http://www.ocmoto.com/index.php?topic=6039.0
http://www.ocmoto.com/index.php?topic=3114.0

I've tried to list the pros and cons below.  If I missed something please let me know:

Pros
Users can easily exchage quesitons and small talk (this can be done through IM or public chat like IRC)

Cons:
Community best summarized by privateer:
the general argument against it is that if the live chat thing is on, people won't be posting, they'd be chatting.  So no posts, and no record of people arranging rides, etc.

Andy

Site post count would go down
There would be no log of the chat, so people wouldnt be able to look and see what was planned before
As Andy mentions, events and other things will be planned but people will forget to post
Since things will be in chat, those that arn't there will be left out of the community

Setup:
In order to do it properly the chats should be logged and stored for easy view.  There should be a chat room for each topic.  For those of you who don't understand web programming, this would take time and lots of it!

Flaming:
Generally in forums online people will flair against others because they feel they have anonymity.  Most people are stopped by the simple question "Dam, this guys stupid, but do i really wanna take the time to write a post and post it".  That's most people.  If you have a chat box at the top of the thread, you can count on it that people will go there and start flaring and causing problems because they'll have even more anonymity.  And because its in chat and not structured like a post, they will likely be able to get away with it.

So please consider the pros and cons above and post your thoughts.   If you vote yes or no, please explain why

I'd say no just cause there is enough public chat programs available. I use trillian so i have MSN Yahoo and AIM runnign at the same time. my usernames are on my profile on OCMOTO so if someone wants to chat with me live there i am. almost 24/7 since i have messenger on my cellphone too.

All the cons out weight the pros if you ask me.

I use to be an active member on SocalSVriders, they had that feature and it was awesome. A lot of use only know eachother by forum screen name, doing other chat programs only adds to the confusion. I see no need to have multiple chat areas for different topics on the forum or even the need to archive the chats.
Its mainly for BS stuff to talk about, not setup serious rides or things like that.

Just check out how they have it setup and watch some of the convo's I like it a lot.

I say yes. It's just another feature to OCmoto.com.  It's just this website evolving.  Give it a shot and lets see what happens.  It if sucks, discontinue it.

A bit off topic, but I think what would be nice to add is a sign-up feature for group rides/events ("Yes"/"Maybe"....no point in having a "No"). Instead of the organizer having to constantly update the thread with attendance. Just a thought.

I'd say yes. Some people like me do not have any IM programs installed. For example, by providing chat, users can quickly organize and keep in touch with other fellow riders before a planned ride and etc.

The nice thing about having an IM program built into the site is my company blocks most chat programs..I can get away with gmail chat but can't do yahoo, AOL or MS chatting programs. So it would be cool to have a chat room or a shout box...now I'm not programming guru but I've heard problems with the shout boxes and their taking up bandwidth..

Just a thought for the founders, your advertising income will go down as well along with the lower postings. Not like that matters to you purely altruistic fellows. :)

The post count may go down slightly but it'll stop alot of pointless pointings pushing more important matters down the line.  Like alot of those 1 liner deals that are always around.  I don't foresee actual rides being set up through this feature but the socalsvriders site has it and its nice to just do a shout out to people that are online or ask a quick question for the masses, and it dosen't seem to affect their postings at all.  Just my 2 cents, try it for a month and see what happens, seems as if there is enough active members where it won't be an issue.

not to dig up an old thread but been thinking about this and it hink it should be done....as realizing that it's actually not hard to make this feature avaliable. at least a test run, especially cause the site will be down for maintenance anyway!
