First 600 miles service (Honda CB500X)
« on: 10/04/13 01:37PM »
Hey guys, need some help here.

Went to my dealership to get first service done, that includes oil change, filter, valves adjustments and something else. Guy at the counter said they'd charge $450, isn't that too much? What should I do?

This is first time I deal with this, so honestly have no idea if this is such a big thing.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm not sure what the "something else" would be, but unless there's a couple of tires thrown in there, $450.00 sounds pretty expensive for a twin cylinder bike with little bodywork.  I suggest calling a few other dealers.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Download the Owner's Manual and/or Service Manual for that bike and see what exactly needs to be done... then compare it with the quote... and as Tim mentioned shop around for quotes.

Don't go to a stealership?

Why not a private mechanic or a mom & pop shop?

I've gone to M^2 Motorworks in Fountain Valley. Nothing but awesome service there! Give them a call! -(714) 751-6686-

Yes, dealerships can be expensive.  However it's a brand-new bike and I would want to make sure there are no warranty problems caused by having an independent shop work on it.  At least for this first service I recommend taking it to a dealer.  Have you talked to Steve at Orange County Honda?  He's a good guy.  Tell him I referred you, it can't hurt.

Thanks everyone,
Googled around, people saying it cost them around $300 to do first service at authorized dealer

I just realized I forgot to mention to service guy that I bought bike from them.

Are they supposed to give some discount? This is  Mission Motorsports I'm talking about.

600 mile valve check? That sounds odd. Most bike don't need it until you reach 12k.

Ditto.

Owners manual pages 45 and 46 indicated a valve adjustment is required.

Every new bike I've bought specified a check of the valves during first service, prior to 1000 miles.  I think this is pretty common.  I think its rare that the valves needs adjustment, but the OEM's usually specify they get checked.

Years ago when I had fewer responsibilities, my friends and I would have a contest as to who could reach the first interval service the quickest.  I think my record was 2 days.
