My 11 1k Build (Future Track/race Bike)
« on: 12/24/13 10:55AM »
Hello all. This will be my first attempt and creating a build thread. Never done one. But built many Cars in other car forums. From my 750HP 99 Civic Hatchback, E46 M3, Infiniti G35, And my last creation 06 Mitusbishi EVO 9 @ 853 AWHP.

Sorry if I start to ramble. But my new project will be My 2011 CBR 1000rr. Bought specifically for track.

A little about me and my background.

Im 26 years old. I have own and ridden a bike since I was 17 years old. I have alot of miles under me, and a couple track days. Mainly go to canyons such as Ortega, GMR, ACH, Malibu. I currently own 3 bikes. 2012 Suzuki GSXR 1000, 2012 Yamaha R1 Josh Hayes replica, and 2011 CBR 1000rr.

This will be my first attempt at building a track/race specific bike.

Current purchases for the bike:

Lockhart Phillip Race fairings

Woodcraft Frame sliders and case savers.

Vortex Rear sets.

Carrozzeria Race Wheels (back up wheels)

Taylor Made Slip on Exhaust (inherited from my brother)

Bazzaz ZFI-QS.

I'm a little new to this so any input would be greatly appricaited, for parts and specs.

And pics will be uploaded as soon as I can snap a few. Thanks all for the support and future advices. :43:

Some sort of case savers, clip ons, crash friendly rear sets, extra levers, proper gearing, good tires, safety wire, and bunch of track time, done. Oh and the original gold if you're gonna go all out haha.

lol thanks guys, im waiting for more parts to arrive, and ill start dissasembling the bike this weekend and mocking up the race plastics. My spare set of wheels should be on the way soon. I went cheap and got carrozzeria's. Planning to run Q3's 200 on the rear, or maybe just stick to the 190's. Any thoughts. This is going to be my first 1k on the track. Usually ride a gsxr 600

Use a stickier tire compound than Q3's. Get GPA211s like bumble bee said or Bridgestone R10s.

No point in having a Track bike without the best rubber, which is the most important part of the bike.

These thousands of dollars should really be spent on track time and track classes.

-Suspension
-Proper Suspension Tuning (in a race shop and a trackside person to help)
-Tires
-Track Days
-Track Classes

Extra wheel, full exhaust, smaller battery will just slow you down because you can spend less money on the above, thus these items slow you down.

Its a bit different than car tuning because it is a higher percentage of the speed is in the rider than the motorcycle.

someone who has only done a "couple track days" (OP's original post) need not buy DOT race rubber...they can get away with Q2/Q3 tires and therefore spend more money on the other items you listed because the tires won't need replacing every couple of outings...

Until you are a track junkie you probably don't need spare wheels, or the power from an exhaust either, I would spend money on track time and suspension then all the other goodies once you've done some more time on the track and decided what you really need.

Also saw no mention of tire warmers :17:

Tire warmers are for timed racing events...you do not need them for track days, even with slicks...just take it easy for a couple of laps and get the tire warmed up.  Watching people throw warmers on their street tread Q2s and BT-003s, etc... has always been a great source of silent amusement for me when going to track days

Tire Warmers also help with heat cycles and preventing tire compounds from degrading after hot/cold periods.  I never had any either, but others I rode with got better grip over the length of the tires life than i did without.

Thanks for all the input guys !! I do agree with the suspension set up and track day classes etc etc. Which I am going to spend a great deal on. Planning to do the STAR class and also the CSS, and of course a SH**T load of track days on many different tracks through out socal. Any suggestions on shops for suspension set ups? also a place to install bazzaz set up and dyno?
