So I Got another Bike FZ1
« on: 08/11/15 08:48AM »
I love this bike. Friend did all the right mods. Penski shock, R1 forks with Ohlins internals and radial mount breaks, corbin seat, PC, fuel cut eliminator, air box mod, driven rear sets frame sliders, rizoma bars and it goes on. Chasing down a few issues with the starter clutch and brakes pulsing right now but have new calipers and pads on order and starter clutch is under warranty.
It has way more power than i can use. I haven't even gotten into the upper power band yet as it has only been used for my commuting so far. Still love my VFR800 for commuting better. I get all hooligan like on the FZ.  The VFR is like the bike you marry and tbe FZ is like the chick you see on the side to do all the things wifey says no to. Analogy only. I don't condone cheating. Any ways between these two and the RC51 I am at max bike capacity. I refuse to sell the RC till I have used up the new tires i put on it. Sorry wifey.
So no more mods or projects except on my riding skills from here on out. Hope the picture posted or I will try and post pics later.

Congrats Bob! So when are we going to get to see this bike in person? It seems the past few ride schedules aren't the best for your schedule lately.

My schedule keeps threatening to lighten up but i don't see it happening. Sundays are still my best shot to get some me time in. Heading up to Mammoth for a family vacation. Plan on hauling one of the motorcycles up there along with mt.bikes and fishing poles. One day i am claiming for a solo ride over the Sonora and Tioga passes. The rest with the family.

Congrats!

You're right in your analysis.  That's exactly what it's like!

I'd check the rotors if the lever is pulsing.

Ride it on,

J~

Changing the front tire tonight and plan to check out the rotors too. Just going on my friends word given to him by his mechanic on the calipers. The used ones were cheap enough with way less hours on them. The rear pads inside pad was completely wasted. Locked up on me for an instant while splitting lanes.

Boredfast, wife wants the RC gone. I just need to get it registered. It is ready to ride.

Congratulations.  It looks like a wicked bike!

The pulsing is definitely rotor related and you may have to replace them.  You can try scouring them with fine wool but it's best to replace them now that you are getting new brake pads.

If you're used to commuting on the VFR, which is fast enough for commuting, going to a liter bike on your commutes will make it HARDER to obey traffic laws!  Trust me!

If the lever is pulsing you may need to just clean out the rotor buttons, it works wonders. Congrats on the bike, one of the best bikes ever made in my opinion.

what are rotor buttons?

In the image below, there are 6, separating the blue carrier from the swept rotor surface material:

Those "buttons" allow the rotor surface to "float" a little bit.

They are the connectors that hold floating rotors to the carriers. They look like buttons and allow the rotor some freedom of movement side to side.

Congrats!!  My analogy would be the same for my Daytona and Ninja.  Ninja is the one you marry, the 'tona is the hot supermodel you keep on the side LOL

My S1000R is easier to both go slow and fast on, FZ1 is more comfortable eating up highway miles though and hard to ride slow after market pipe gets LEO attention much easier so must me more careful around town.  :)

Thanks all. FZ1 will be my canyon ride mostly. I had an '08 Tuono that got me in trouble with the law and dmv. It just didn't like being tame and civil. FZ1 has that flair for wanting to be ridden hard so given the loud Yoshi pipe i will have to ride it smarter.

I had mine dynoed a few years ago @ 144.6 RWHP
It had an MIVV slip on, PC5 with Ivan's custom map, Ivan's FCE, Air box mod w/ a high flow filter, gutted cat, and flies removed.
That bike surprised many people including me.
I am positive you will enjoy yours as much as I did mine.
