Finally got a bike I can be proud of
« on: 03/23/16 07:56AM »
Hello OCMoto.
I have been riding on and off for about 10 years and have about 20K miles under my belt.  I just purchased my 3rd bike, a 1986 Nighthawk 700S.  Coming from a DR650 and then a KLR650, this Nighthawk is as smooth as silk.  The power band is completely different, it was built for the street, and it is awesome.  I no longer dread jumping on the freeway as the 650s were both capable, but not happy going 75; the Nighthawk eats it up.  The bike was a really good deal, but will need a little TLC moving forward.  Right now the gas milage is the most pressing issue....getting under 30 mpg instead of 40+.
I am here because I have never done a bike night, or a group ride, and now that I feel I can keep up, or travel further from home on my fluffing amazing bike, I thought I should chime in instead of continuing to lurk.

I look forward to having a comfy place to check in a read/discuss bikes on the daily.

Cheers.

Welcome Bramer! The Nighthawk is a great bike, still kick myself for passing one up when I was buying my first bike all those years ago.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.  Looking forward to my first bike night/group ride.

Hoping to possibly get a pass from Mrs. Bramer to hit up the Long Beach event tomorrow night, 4/14/2016.

A little late, but welcome!

I put a few of those together put of the crate when they were new.  The test rides were always fun!  We all liked the ADVS that Honda had added to the front suspension.  Forks were way too squishy back then.  Did you know that your bike has hydraulic lifters?

Tire pressure, a bad chain, and dragging brake pads are the first things to look at when assessing mileage problems.  A friend was getting bad mileage and found that his nephew had stuck a croc inside his chain guard.  It cost him about 10-mpg until he found it stuck next to his counter-shaft sprocket.

Ride on,

J~

Well, the plot thickens.  This happened:

Bike was parked where the picture is taken from.  It got launched from being parked in the spot on the left.  Dude backed into it hard.  Long story short, he paid me out a couple days later and now this bike sits in my garage needing fueling love, and with a nice chunk missing from a few cooling fins.  Otherwise, she is fine. I was able to ride out of there with 1/3 of a clutch lever.

Here is my replacement:
2000 Nighthawk 750

34k miles.  I put on a rear tire, pulled the baffles and shimmed the carbs.  It runs very well, and I love the sound.  I just did a run up to Wrightwood via Ortega Hwy and the 15 yesterday.  200 mile day through wind, rain, and 115 heat.  Bike ate it up.

bramer out
