WTF! Airplane crash lands on 405
« on: 06/30/17 10:05AM »
Wow! News just showed a small plane that crashed on the 405 freeway just shy of John Wayne Airport. Anyone see it happen?

I went through there a few minutes before it happened. All I could think is I was glad no bikes were in the HOV lanes either north or south when it happened. That would have been ugly. I hope the pilot and passenger from the plane come through OK.

Was going north on the 405 at that time but to pick up a package got off at University and back on via the 73 so missed it completely. What a mess, planes don't climb well with 1/2 their engines not working its a wonder nobody got seriously injured. What a mess.

I went through that mess this morning on the way to work. :6: If I hadn't been running late I would have missed it. Although it could have been worse...had I been in the car I would have been there forever.

It was complete chaos on 405S near South Coast Plaza with all traffic stopped/parked and people driving all over the place trying to get off the freeway! Luckily I was on the bike so I was able to work over and get on 55N, which was stop and go, and then took surface streets through Irvine. When I got back on the 405 at Jamboree going south it was a weird sight because there were zero cars. The whole southbound freeway was empty.

I knew traffic would be bad this morning with the holiday weekend, but didn't figure a crashed airplane would be part of the equation. :o  My 35-40 min morning commute took me 1hr 30min.

Went to metric method this morning and when I was getting back on the freeway to LA, saw a huge red traffic jam on my radar. Screw it, took a detour and then my wife calls me saying plane crashed. Wow. When you think you can have a safer commute in car, this shit happens.

I work with pilots.  They suspect the guy lost his engine long before, but instead of landing immediately on an isolated road or in an empty field, the errant pilot thought he could make it to SNA.  It's hard to correct a bad flight path with only half the power, and you end up on the freeway on the morning news.

The rescue video was crazy, the pilot had obvious facial injuries and was bleeding badly, the folks rendering aid took off the pilot's socks, they ripped his shirt open, and then were undoing his belt for no explicable reason.  It almost sounds like the plot to a soft core porn movie...  :P

I used to fly small planes, and this is by far the most likely scenario.  It happens a lot when, on takeoff, when the throttles are against the firewall, and an engine goes.  The best thing to do is put it down straight ahead.  Of course that's difficult in Irvine.  But this guy had a twin engine plane.  Even with one engine he should've been able to maintain level flight and do gentle turns for quite a while.  My guess is while trying to make it back to the airport, he panicked, banked the plane too much for his low airspeed, and lost lift.  It makes me wonder how much twin-engine experience the pilot has.
