Nah, that's the motorcycle devil testing your faith in the sport.  Get 'er fixed and ride on.

BD, I just came up for air with my VFR being down for 2 months!  Had a tough time diagnosing a vacuum leak, replaced a bunch of little parts, waiting a week here and a week there to get parts in, wrenching on weekends, and an hour or two on a few weekdays to get her back on the road.  Finally just finished and worked through the issues today.

So OC SV650S is right.  It's not a message from above.  It's just your bike needs attention.  When you put that many miles on, and your bike is no longer new, these things WILL happen.  Nothing is maintenance-free.

2 months?!?

no way...I'd go nuts

I bought the battery from CG last night ($130 LOL) and will pickup the R/R from elctrosport tomorrow morning...

well actually, I should grab my voltmeter and test it out to make sure it's not the stator.

but...if the bike was starting and running fine, but just wouldn't start on a battery that was 8 months old; wouldn't a faulty R/R have killed the battery?

Yup two months!

Primarily waiting for parts...if I had bought the parts from the dealership it may have cut the wait time down.  Also, I had other bikes to ride so I wasn't in a big hurry.

oh no wonder you've been taking the DR on all those rides LOLOL

other bikes are clutch for the fix...my YZ250 is getting rebuilt right now...so right now I'm bike-less...I even went out and got a bicycle from wal-mart last night for some quick saddle time LOLOL

Driving the truck behind 5 lanes of cars, each of them going the same 62mph, with nobody in front of them is extremely frustrating...at least on the bike you can split past them

yeah I messed up...apparently 11.8 volts is enough volts to run a vstrom

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/OTVfD7KGzIg" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/OTVfD7KGzIg</a>

above 3,000 rpm it won't go above 11.8ish volts

stator failures are common among vstroms (so are the R/R...so I might as well replace it now)...so off to elctrosport on Thursday for the stator...and it will have 25% more output anyways for heated grips and lights n things

EDIT: put the battery on a tender for a mere 2 hours and the bike fired right up. Looks like it's definitely not getting charged by the stator...well, at the very least I can charge the battery to get it started, then do a loop...just need to make it back home before I turn it off

Beware of higher voltage stators because they will run hotter than the stock voltage. And if there is insufficient oil flow to dissipate that additional heat, there goes another stator sooner rather than later. So a little more would be ok but a lot more, like an additional 25 more watts...I’d be suspicious. Consult other owners who have used that higher output stator. That and use high quality oil and change it often, as well as keep your coolant fresh and the whole system functions properly. High heat for prolonged periods are what kills stators. Exposure to old oil that eventually turns bad from repeated heat cycles also kills stators. You’d be lucky if a MC stator lasts past 50k miles.
