the other forums I read use vbulletin and xenforo.  kind of all seem the same from the user side, not sure if there's an admin/mod difference (altho I know xenforo can't split a thread).

I wish there was a 'like' button so I could interact with a thread without having to actually post.  Sometimes it's hard to know if people read/appreciate a post and a reply with a 'i agree' just seem unnecessary.

Check out ADVRider.com - they have LOTS of those features.

Just looked, they use Xenforo with add-ons by Waindigo. They have a "like" button for posts, and the quoting is really nice. No idea about the admin/mod side. Didn't know Xenforo couldn't split a thread... Is there a need for that?

when valuable thread drift happens, it's nice to split things off.  conversely, merging threads is nice for duplicate topics.

Don't much care about the layout right now if it comes up at all it's a win :)

The only thing I'd like is a "Like" button.

Other than that, just keeping up-to-date with SMF versions would be a plus (security.) I know that's made difficult with the event plugin that's used; there wasn't an updated version last I checked.

my understanding is we wrote that event/thread plugin ourselves and it's what kept us from updating.

It's a (well.. was. inactive at this time) publicly available plugin. I tracked down the old version on a test install, and tried to work on updating it. It had too many issues with the new version that would require nearly a full re-write to address.

Edit: I did find a similar plugin and was able to implement similar functionality after some modification, though.

Overall the design and images has held up over the years.  My suggestion is if you want to attract more sponsors, and as a byproduct more members, add a dynamic space on the site for ads (the goal being no member should have to put their own dime into keeping this website alive).
Every day is ride to work day!
