Essentially what thepretender said. I was invited to the group and was accepted. You basically have to have several years of riding experience, preferably track experience to go along with it and some higher level of rider training is also preferred. Having taken the CSS class before and along other rider training, allowed me to get my foot in the door. Since you are there for both safety and for reporting any incorrect riding and/or not performing the lessons correctly, you need to be on your game. They really want people who are observant, good riders and have the experience and knowledge to relay what you observe. That being said, perhaps a track day organization would have a similar arrangement and seeking to volunteer with them might net you the similar results.

Note however, although no track fees are incurred, you do have to pay for your own food, lodging, gas and any other travel cost. Still beats a poke in the eye.

Correct, most other organizations do it as well.  Most corner workers are volunteers.  With some organizations, you get to ride in the morning and corner work in the afternoon.

I think some of their employees are paid depending on what they do. Others just work for the track time and social experience.

Can someone school me on CA tracks?

Differences? Costs? Speeds? Quality of pavement?

I figured we are so lucky to live here and have year-round track riding, I best take a lap at each one from a YOLO standpoint

Pavement only...and I would likely get a track bike only...I am guessing ninja 250/300 or sv650?

We are very lucky to have several tracks 1-3h away (more if you drive further).
* Autoclub speedway (closest - haven't been);
* Willow Springs (very fast - haven't been) and Streets of Willow (mostly tight and technical with a few fast sections - bumpy)
* Buttonwillow (smooth - fast with some technical)
* Chuckwalla (smooth - mainly sweepers - kind of a momentum track)

Cost is typically $150-$200 per day.

I just came back from SoW and going to Buttonwillow later this month.  I personally love Buttonwillow; great mix of fast with some technical.  Ninja 300/SV are great choices; I would personally go with the SV so you don't get passed on the straight all the time.  R6 is great too; cheap and a million parts available.

Let me know if/when you want to go (and/or if you have other questions).  A friend of mine rents R3's too in case you wanted to try it first.

Gear I am okay on...I have been a street rider for so long I have amassed an adequate collection. For track I run a 2-piece Vanson leather with integrated back protection, gauntlet gloves and Dainese RR boots (that I wear on the street). Pants have knee pucks.

I also have a truck, a cooler, and umbrella that can attach to my truck, and blah blah carry stuff to track days.

$300 all-in (gas, tires, snacks, etc.).  Show up and ride :)
