You're gonna die. Now here's a comment card
« on: 08/27/18 08:47AM »
I had a business conference and my weekend job scheduled in Downtown LA over the weekend, so to make it easy I got a cheap room up there so I wasn't commuting late at night, probably after a few drinks.

Checking in, I asked if I could keep my bike in the motel lobby overhang, so it would be a bit more conspicuous than in a parking spot around the back of the building.

She meant well, I'm sure... The lady behind the counter said "Ooh, you rode here on a motorcycle? Those things are dangerous".

She then spent the next 20 minutes talking about a friend who got killed on a motorcycle, and how, last month, someone who got in a bad motorcycle wreck on the 101 was airlifted to a nearby trauma center, and how his family came from out of town and stayed in their motel for a month while he was in the hospital.

She then gave me my key, the wifi password, and a comment card, saying "If you could please say some really nice things about me, that would be great!"

Oh boy...

Yeah...

People are like that.  I still get it from all sides here just like I did out there.  At least some people care enough to say something.  Even if it's only to make themselves feel better.

Ride on,

This quote s from a Henry Miller book (I forget which one) always comes to mind when encountering people like the hotel clerk.

“It is the people with secret attachments to various temptations who busy themselves with removing these temptations from other people: Really they are defending themselves under the pretext of defending others, because at heart they fear their own weakness.”

When I began to ride, everyone I knew, still true, had a story about a friend or family member who died or was injured on a bike. In each case, when I quizzed them on details, the rider was engage in a high risk style of riding: going 100 mph on the freeway, riding a wheelie in a parking lot, trying to plow through lanes too fast for traffic. etc.
In 35 years of riding, I've made contact with a car only once. Slow down, enjoy and have respect for the bike; make yourself a good rider.
Now that 35 year number is a little bit false. In the fist 35 years riding, only once; since they took away the median and opened all HOV lanes on the 405 did I make contact with a car. Through Long Beach and OC, I had two incidents with cars in the first two weeks since the Caltrans change. As much as, in both situations, the cager was being an asshat, clearly, I needed to adjust how I approach traffic without a median for cushion. Since that time, I've had zero contact with a car. My primary point is how much control you have to mitigate the risk you face on a bike by thinking through and adjusting how you ride.

What I like to do is open the conversation up, tell them how long I've been riding, the passionate adventures I've been on, the life long friendships I've made, the friends I've lost.  Usually about the time I'm getting tired of my own monologue they realize how silly their comments are, and will typically apologize.

Its like telling a smoker its bad for their health..... they know that and choose to smoke.

We ALL know motorcycles are dangerous, and we opt in, with a smile!

See you guys on the next ride!

The older I get the more I start to embrace your deal that we’re going to die anyways and I don’t want to end up 90 wishing that I rode more
