************* Skill Levels Defined:
Noobie -You have been riding your motorcycle for at least 3 months (hopefully more) and have confidence that you can ride around streets without any issues eg. stopping at stop lights, not stalling the bike, not falling over etc, making u-turns, etc.
Intermediate - You have been riding for at least 6 months (hopefully more) and feel comfortable enough to handle twisty roads as found in local canyons. You are mature enough to understand going slow is okay and not to try and keep up with riders that are faster than you as it will result in a crash.
Expert - You have been riding for years and hopefully been riding with the members going on the ride long enough to know how they ride.

r u sure wrightwood to ach - newcombs ranch is open? i checked with the restaurant, and they said its closed, and to take alternate routes.

r u sure wrightwood to ach - Newcomb's Ranch (http://www.newcombsranch.com/) is open? i checked with the restaurant, and they said its closed, and to take alternate routes.
Thanks you for the heads-up.
The ACH part of the route (with detour to start from Sunland) would be the same I did this Monday, but maybe there is a change since then.
On the Newcomb's Ranch (http://www.newcombsranch.com/) website they do say ACH is closed from Wrightwood.
I will also call the restaurant for the final word and re-plan this trip to avoid ACH altogether since most of ACH would be closed.

Thank you!

Thanks, That matches their advertised info...
Quote
From Wrightwood - ROAD CLOSED, use alternate:
Alternate Route from Wrightwood during Seasonal Closure
Take CA-138 (Pearblossom Highway) to Sierra Highway
At Soledad Pass, take Angeles Forest Highway SOUTH for approximately 16 miles
Turn Left on Upper Big Tujunga
for approximately 9 miles
Turn Left on Angeles Crest Highway
for approximately 8 miles
Arrive at Newcombís Ranch on the Left side
Since we would end up avoiding ACH with detours on both LA and Wrightwood side, it would no longer make sense to try to include ACH for this ride. Still trying to get them on the phone myself (626-440-1001) as a final check.

Yes, I was looking at the same info (http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/Hourly) ==> So we would only need to do the same detour on LA side like I did on Monday.
I'm trying to reach the restaurant myself (they are not answering) for their latest comments, to resolve this one way or another.

I doubt the resteraunt will be open as you currently have to back track to get there

Yes, if ACH is closed on both sides of that restaurant they would not have much business, which is supporting the new closure likelyhood.

For what it's worth...
Called Grizzly Cafe in Wrightwood (760-249-6713) and they say there is no change since Monday, with the only closure being on LA side.
Called Caltrans (1-800-427-7623) but the computer voice simply repeats the info posted on their website.

yeah caltrans says its only closed at the begining of the 2 that route avoids it and it's open to wrightwood

Grizzly Cafe will be open since it's in Wrightwood and Newcomb's is only open Friday through Sunday.

We were there this weekend.  We started from the Wrightwood side and it was closed just before Mt. Wilson.

This is the route we took to get down:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?doflg=ptm&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=102771467801581162582.000488149a6ba8107e3cc&ll=34.254521,-118.245678&spn=0.067538,0.179901&z=13

Careful at the beginning of Big Tujunga Canyon as the road was kind of washed away and you'll be kind of off roading for 100ft or so, after that it's pretty smooth.

Also there are lots of rocks/boulders in places on ACH so keep your eyes peeled.

I agree with all you say because I took that detour 2 days ago (Monday): Double ACH ride (http://www.ocmoto.com/index.php?topic=29131).

I called the hardware store in Wrightwood (760-249-3653) and Victor said there is a new closure since Monday, between Wrightwood and Newcomb's Ranch restaurant.

That's not good. Probably due to all the rocks coming down due to the snow runoff. I hope its only a short term closure.

Grizzly Cafe will be open since it's in Wrightwood and Newcomb's is only open Friday through Sunday.
Hi Agustin,
I was asking Grizzly Cafe if ACH West of them was open (not if their restaurant was open).

Not sure which days Newcomb's Ranch (http://www.newcombsranch.com/) is supposed to be open during the week, because there is conflicting info...
On their website main page they have:
Quote
We're Finally Open!
Fridays 12:00 Noon - 8:00 PM
Saturdays 8:00AM - 8:00 PM
Sundays 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM
and on their contact page (and answering machine)
Quote
Hours
8am to 10pm Ė Monday through Friday
7am to 10pm Ė Saturday, Sunday, & Holidays
Open 7 days a week

I called again the hardware store in Wrightwood (760-249-3653) to get a bit more info, and now they say they is no new road closure since I rode through 2 days ago, on Monday (with detour on LA side).

So far the only information stating that there could be a new closure since Monday is...
r u sure wrightwood to ach - newcombs ranch is open? i checked with the restaurant, and they said its closed, and to take alternate routes.
But he could still be right.

I agree that this proposed alternate route is a long ride:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Red+Hill+Ave&daddr=E+Santiago+Canyon+Rd+to:Santiago+Canyon+Rd+to:N+Circle+Dr+to:CA-38+E+to:Big+Bear+Blvd+to:CA-138+W+to:CA-91+W+to:S+Main+St&geocode=FcQeAgIdlqv5-A%3BFWwhAwId5AL8-A%3BFY35AQIdU0D9-A%3BFTr_AgIdOjAL-Q%3BFV48CQIdMPwH-Q%3BFQuECgId_DII-Q%3BFbKpCwId_v0A-Q%3BFd78BAIdjsz8-A%3BFaI2AgIdYnn5-A&hl=en&mra=mr&mrcr=0&via=1,4,6,7&dirflg=t&sll=33.756886,-117.738762&sspn=0.274878,0.417137&ie=UTF8&ll=33.560851,-117.366943&spn=1.089424,1.374664&z=10

This variation shaves off 41 minutes by not doing Santiago canyon that we do often because it is local:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=W+MacArthur+Blvd&daddr=CA-74+E+to:W+Florida+Ave+to:N+Circle+Dr+to:Sandalwood+Dr+to:34.159545,-116.93161+to:Big+Bear+Blvd+to:N+Cajon+Blvd+to:S+Main+St&geocode=FWo4AgIdA3X5-A%3BFYw2_wEdfLH8-A%3BFTTyAgIdlAQH-Q%3BFTr_AgIdOjAL-Q%3BFdyxBgIdyNkF-Q%3B%3BFQuECgId_DII-Q%3BFcOMCwId0mz_-A%3BFfk0AgIdW3n5-A&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=4&mrsp=5&sz=10&via=5&dirflg=t&sll=33.916245,-117.295105&sspn=0.999446,1.661682&ie=UTF8&ll=33.936524,-117.290039&spn=1.003762,1.661682&z=10

Newcomb's Ranch (http://www.newcombsranch.com/) is supposed to be open on Friday starting at noon. If I cannot get an answer from them by 2pm Friday, we will avoid ACH for this ride and switch to the above alternate ride.

I've done most of the route before.  I believe the word people in my group used was "epic."  I'm booked on saturday or I'd join.

If you haven't ridden that section of 138, be advised: it is the real deal.  Just east of 15, lots of blind corners, off camber turns, pretty tight.  The section beyond Silverwood Lake is the same.

enjoy

I agree. Did this on May 15 (http://www.ocmoto.com/index.php?topic=28330) and thoroughly enjoyed it, which is why it will be done again this Saturday, either as part of the original plan or the "plan B" route (decision Friday 2pm at the latest).

A couple stones and moist asphault don't scare me off...
I like your spirit.

Got a PM from "endleesss" saying that his check dates back 2 weeks.  Thank you!
So since I just did ACH on Monday and there is no other obvious information of a new closure since then...
Update, 2010/6/3, 7:30pm: I got hold of the Newcomb's Ranch on the phone. They confirmed that ACH is open towards Wrightwood.
We are ON for the original route including ACH !

We can do the backup ride (Ortega, Idyllwild, Big bear, Silverwood) another weekend.

Answers:
1) Very close: Only deviated to try a new restaurant in Wrightwood: Evergreen Cafe, and then following Lone Pine Canyon rd to the 138. I updated the map in my original post to reflect this small change.
2) Yes.

Get out there and have fun.
