"UNOFFICIAL" Rides / GMR Ride - Sunday, 1/21/18

We are planning to ride to GMR this Sunday, January 21st.

Meeting Location:  Starbucks at the corner of Lone Hill & Route 66:
Meeting Time:  8:30 AM KSU. 

I'll be there earlier than that so I can I have coffee and a breakfast sandwich.  Please feel free to show up sooner. 

After we come down from Crystal Lake, we are heading to Eureka! in Claremont for an early lunch.

Let's take advantage of this great weather and so far clear and clean mountain roads.

Sport tires last between 3k-6k miles usually. The ride was under 300 miles if Iím not mistaken. Itís a day ride is all.

The ride was just perfect.  Weather was great, not too cold yet it got warm enough for us to have to take our liners off.  The roads were in perfect shape.  Even the ones off the beaten path were nice and clean.  There were tons of other bikers out.  Most of the vehicles we encountered let us by and overall, everyone seemed to be enjoying their day and were very happy to be out and about.

Yeah we need to ride this really soon.

If the roads are good then of course we go up Palomar.  Seems like this was a warm storm and there may not be any snow that fell up there.

Iím open to wood fired pizza also.

Myself and a couple of members plan to ride to Borrego Springs this coming Sunday, 1/14/18.  We will meet up in South Orange County, CA.  Ride across Ortega Highway, then head south from there.  Probably will skip Palomar Mountain due to the recent wet storm we had and instead, head straight to Borrego Springs via Highway 76.

First meeting location here:  Starbucks at the corner of Antonio Parkway & Ortega Highway
KSU:  7:45 AM.
The earlier we get rolling, the sooner we get back home.

LOL! He has a way with words. My first bike was an XT550 and it was one of the most fun, easygoing, simple machines ever. Easy to wheelie. Lightweight. Kickstart. It vibrated a lot too.

On a side note, I replaced my vacuum operated slide carburetor with a pumper carb on my DR650. This new carb is the anti-EPA/CARB carburetor. It pours fuel into the engine when you open the throttle passed 1/4 then dumps any excess when you back off too soon into the atmosphere! But The throttle response, the additional torque at low & midrange it provides is awesome. Vacuum operated slides SUCK!!! They should be banned from existence!

One doesn't appreciate wind protection on a bike until you ride a bike with a good fairing.  Or, you go from a good fairing to a naked.  Then you REALLY will notice.  It's even more pronounced when you ride highways a lot and/or windy days, especially when its cold out. 

My daily commute is only 14 miles on the freeway one way, and then 14 miles on a fairly empty backroad at night.  On the freeway, switching from the VFR800 to the DR650, I really prefer the VFR.  Speeds there are above 80 and having that fairing in front sure is nice, especially when the wind is blowing.  On the backroad portion at night, it's still nicer on the VFR when it's cold out.  But the DR isn't too bad even up to 80, mainly because I have a very small windshield.  Without that windshield, the DR is miserable at any speed above  60 mph.  Simply exposes me to way too much wind blast to be comfortable for any ride longer than a few miles.  My neck muscles get fatigue from keeping my head straight up and level.  Below 60 mph and it's fine.

I used to think that way until I got my first heated vest.  It's a game changer in winter.  Now I have a full sleeve & collar heated liner plus heated gloves!.  Heated gloves are sublime.  When it's 45 degrees or below I'm not thinking about stopping to get warm or when the hell that sun is going to warm me up, I'm thinking about having more fun by continuing to ride!  When it's too cold in the morning and everyone stays home under their blankets, I say bring it on and let's ride!

Good for you!  That bike was in exceptional shape. 

Mine is at that point where it makes no sense to sell it for money.  Better just to keep it or replace.

You almost have to give away a used bike nowadays especially if it has a lot of miles. My Ď07 VFR800 with 52k miles is probably worth about $1500 if I wanted to sell it quick. $2000 if I were patient and even then thatís reaching. Iím better off trading it in.

Looked like a great Black Friday ride.  I've been wanting to visit Pioneer Town.  Probably best not to go there on a weekend though.

The article hit the nail right in the head.  The MC industry believes the Baby Boomers & Gen-Xers who bought all those motorcycles during the pre-RE Crash of 2008 are going to come around again in the form of Gen-Y group.  But how can they when the Gen-Y are struggling to make ends meet?  That and it's so much easier and way more practical to get a car.  It's possible that we are witnessing a further culling of the MC industry from it's pre-2008 level.  Too many dealerships competing for shrinking buyer base is probably unsustainable.  Same with aftermarket suppliers.  It's the market trying to reach its equilibrium based on a "normal" number of riders/customers available for them.  The MC boom may not come around again for a long time.

The way I see it, riding just isn't for everyone.  It's way too complicated to operate a bike.  You're a slave to the weather.  And the barriers to entry are high & expensive.  And it should be!  It's not like driving a car and it is way less forgiving of mistakes.  Timid, distracted, and people lacking of self control need not apply.  I think that it is a good thing that there is a process of "natural selection" to become a rider, otherwise if it were THAT easy then you will have every douchebag riding around like dicks on the road!  God knows we already have enough of those.  Right now, only the most determined get a license to ride, then raise the cash to buy a bike plus their gear.  Go visit Asia and see for yourself what it's like when everyone and their grandmother rides a freakin'  two wheeler!  Be careful what you wish for!

Thanks.  My 50 mm lens isn't capable of opening that wide to get that bokeh shot.  Nor is it capable of softening up the blurred background like that.  One of these days if I stop buying stuff for my bikes, I'll upgrade my lens!  LOL!

Well, I think stators and rectifiers are "wear items" on most, if not all bikes.  I believe that if you plan to keep a bike over 40k miles, replace their stators and maybe their rectifiers before the 50k miles rolls around.  The VFR forums are littered with Stator/Rectifier issues, how-to, preventative, etc.,  Since the VFR owners in general keep their bikes a long time, these issues frequently pop up more often on internet forums.  Late model VFR's usually will need a new stator any time after 40k miles.  When a stator/rectifier fails, you won't know for a while that your electrical system is being overloaded until something just melts, pops, or dies. 

It's good to know that your M900 is still running strong with just the usual electrical stuff that needed to be sorted.

Can you tell me what lens you used for this photograph, and specifically what settings?

Impressive!  How would you rate it's overall reliability?  I've always wanted a Monster but was always worried about it's long term reliability.  I'd like to get an old school M900 just to tinker with. 

My VFR just went over the 50k mile mark and I just replaced its clutch and about to replace the water pump, which started leaking last week.  The clutch was making some weird noises.  Also had to clean my fuel injectors because they started acting up from being dirty.  I replaced my stator 6k miles ago.  Other than these the bike has been very reliable.

Nice bikes. Love your Monster.

Now is a great time to ride weather wise. Not too cold and not hot either.
