July 8, 2016: http://fortune.com/2016/07/08/harley-davidson-brake-investigation/

"430,000 motorcycles could be affected."

"Riders reported sudden brake system failure occurring without warning."

"The announcement of the investigation follows what was a record-setting year for recalls at Harley-Davidson according to the Wall Street Journal."

"A 2014 recall was also issued for over 60,000 motorcycles over malfunctioning brakes, but in that case, the brakes were not failing without warning but engaging unexpectedly."

MEETUP SPOT: Starbucks, 26342 Oso Pkwy, Mission Viejo, CA
WHEN: Sunday, July 10, 2016
TIME: 7:45 AM, KSU @ 8:00 AM

Route map: https://goo.gl/maps/kLkrAcQCPLN2

I plan to ride all the way to Banning and return home via the same route shown. Individual riders may obviously choose to take the I-10/CA-60 freeways home.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Pace: Moderate

Short breaks along the way. Lunch in Idyllwild.

Staggered formation on city roads and freeways, single file on the twisties. No one left behind. Full gear strongly suggested.

I plan to keep this log updated as the service unfolds. Hopefully the dealer will make this a favorable review in the end. We'll see.
[EDIT 1/16/2016: I took my bike back, unrepaired. Updates below.]

2012 Suzuki GSXR750
25,700 miles
Cold start problem:
Began occurring approximately one month/1,000 miles ago, intermittently, but is now occurring at each cold start, when bike is cold and weather is cold. Motor turns over, idles rough, stalls, displays FI light. When restarting, must turn throttle and hold open until idle normalizes. Takes 10+ minutes to warm up; if ridden before fully warm, bike will stall when clutch lever is pulled. Once bike is warmed up, no problem turning off and restarting an hour or two later; bike will start and run normally.

12/19/2015
Took bike to Southern California Motorcycles. Service rep stated that they will check the logged trouble codes first and foremost. Repair order states “DIAG RUN ISSUE,” $120.00 labor + $3.99 shop supplies, date promised: 12/23/2015.

12/24/2015
No communication from dealer. Called to get status: “Technician is on it now.”

12/26/2015
No communication from dealer. Called to get status. I asked what trouble codes they found stored; rep stated that they have not checked, because they wanted to first see if they could reproduce the problem, and they are unable. I reminded them that the problem occurs when the bike and the weather are cold. They were storing the bike in a warm area. I asked if they could keep it in a cold garage overnight, and they were already planning to do that. I sent them a video I took of the cold start problem that occurred on the morning I took the bike in for service. I again asked them to download the trouble codes.

12/26/2015
Received voicemail from dealer at 5:50 PM (10 minutes before closing): trouble codes indicated problem with ISC or TPS. They requested I call them to discuss the situation.

[Dealer closed 12/27, 12/28]

12/29/2015
Called dealer for update. Rep stated that they have tried everything according to their manual but did not give specifics other than some reset regarding ISC/TPS. At this point, rep stated that their procedure is to call Suzuki and request instructions on how to proceed. But the person they need to talk to will be out until after the 1st of the new year. Rep advised that the repair costs will more likely be covered under my extended warranty if I leave the bike with them rather than pick it up and ride it during the holiday, if the problem should get worse. So I did not take back the bike.

1/8/2016
No communication from dealer. Called to get status. Rep said he will check and call me back. Called back and stated that they are on the phone now with Suzuki to get instructions on troubleshooting the issue.

[UPDATED 1/16/2016]

1/12/2016
Dealer called to give me an update. Stated that the technician sent a recording to Suzuki DSM to show the bike having the problem, and the DSM reviewed it and recommended a leakdown/compression check and valve clearance check. But that work is not covered under the initial $124 diagnostic charge, so I would have to approve a $424.31 charge to go forward. Once the root cause is determined, the dealer would have to inform Suzuki, who would judge at that time whether or not they would cover the service under my extended warranty.

1/14/2016
I called the dealer to inform them that I am not authorizing any further charge to have them go forward, and that I will pick up the bike on 1/16.

1/16/2016
Paid $124 to pick up my unrepaired bike. Rep made it a point to tell me that they cleaned up the bike for me. Got one block away and could feel that the front tire was very low. Went back and had them check tire pressure. F 22, R 31. (Apparently, dusting off the plastic bits was more important to them than checking the tires after letting my bike sit for four weeks.)

My impression of this dealer's service department: FAIL. Poor communication; work not done in a timely manner; valve check, etc., not included in diagnostic charge. Tire pressure was the icing on the fluffing cake.

My impression of Suzuki's extended warranty policy and procedures: FAIL. Since the cold start issue is not normal for a well maintained bike with only 25k miles, THAT right there should constitute warranty coverage to fix the problem. I mean, I didn't bring in a bike in shambles from a crash, or a bike that's had repairs after a crash. The bike has had normal use, no track time, no mods, regular maintenance for which I can provide receipts upon request. They shouldn't expect a warranty holder to agree up front to pay hundreds of dollars with no guarantees. Suzuki has made the extended warranty into a gimmick and a scam. And they seem to have the dealers by the short-and-curlies on procedures that they have to follow if they want to get paid by corporate for potential warranty work.

Sunday night will be the night. The last such eclipse happened in 1982, and the next won't occur until 2033.

There will be a total lunar eclipse, when the moon is fully within Earth's shadow, causing a full bloodmoon! At the same time, the moon will be closest to the Earth in its elliptical orbit, and therefore its biggest in the sky -- a supermoon!

Some say end times are upon us. Thank Flying Spaghetti Monster I don't believe in that stuff! But if you do, what better way to go out than with a motorcycle ride under a big red moon?!

Time: 9:00 AM
Location: Fullerton DMV, 909 West Valencia Drive (91 fwy or 5 fwy, Euclid St. exit)

KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO is taking a comprehensive look at a controversy unique to California: lane-splitting by motorcyclists.

As states across the country reject moves to allow motorcyclists to ride between lanes on freeways and streets, California is the only place in the U.S. where it’s still legal – and people love it or hate it.

“KNX Spotlight: Life in the Split Lane”, hosted by KNX Anchor Tom Haule and investigative reporter Charles Feldman, will feature motorcycle riders and lane-splitting opponents to help listeners understand all sides of this controversial issue impacting drivers every day.

Listeners can follow the conversation on Twitter using #KNXSpotlight or call (866) 569-1070 from 10-11 a.m

[EDIT: 3/7/15] PRACTICE CANCELED

Since people who did not click "I plan to attend" have shown up at previous practices, I thought I should update this. I will not be practicing on Sunday due to rear brake failure today. I bled the system, but the pedal is still with hardly any pressure. No leaks that I can see, and pads are new, so maybe the master cylinder is bad. I don't know. Can't do gymkhana well without that rear brake.

Suzuki / Um, what's this tube?
« on: 02/22/15 09:52AM »
Yesterday at Newcomb's, I saw a bike with a tube running between the steering stem and a cap on the top of the tank. That is new to me. Never seen that before.

What's going on there?

Misc / Moto-gymkhana practice #3 - JUNE 28
« on: 06/16/14 08:34PM »
Meetup #1 had 5 riders. Meetup #2 had 7 riders. Let's keep the wheels in motion!  :17:

Please sign up if you plan to attend. Due to space limitations, attendance is limited to 8 riders.
(Don't pay attention to this if we've talked outside this forum.)

Date: Saturday, June 28
Time: 8:45 AM, KSU @ 9:00 AM
Meetup spot: Irvine Marketplace, movie theater parking lot (noobie ride meetup spot)
Practice spot: TBA (5-15 miles from the meetup spot)

All types of bikes and all skill levels, beginner to advanced, noob to pro, are welcome.

We'll set up pylons and tennis ball markers for figure-8 practice/warm-up and for the main course. People seemed to like the course layout below, so we could set that up again. One idea I have is to run it in reverse direction. . . . Get some heat in those tires before tackling the full rotations.
[EDIT 6/23/14: New course layout! See my other post further below.]

This is an informal practice session, not an organized competition (or even an unorganized one). But if you would like to time yourself, I have a wireless lap timer that you can borrow.

This is not for stunting.
Speeds will generally be 0-15 mph.  :36:

Ride at your own risk.

If you come out, you are agreeing to keep the practice location(s) to yourself and use discretion with pics, video, etc. Clean, grippy lots where security doesn't kick us out are hard to come by!

EDIT 5/26/14: Due to space limitations, signups are limited to 7 riders, please.

When: Monday, May 26
Meetup (not practice) location: Irvine Marketplace, movie theater parking lot (noobie ride meetup spot)
Time: 9:45 AM, KSU @ 10:00 AM
Please sign up above if you plan on showing up.

I'll be heading out to one of my usual practice locations for a little low-speed maneuver practice. You're welcome to join me and practice at your own risk. We'll set up tennis ball halves for figure 8, cloverleaf, slalom, circles, whatever. All skill levels and all types of bikes are welcome.

This is not an organized competition.

This is not for stunting.

Speeds will be 0-15 mph.  :36:

Most likely, the practice location -- TBA at the meetup spot -- will be a location that is 5 miles from the meetup spot. I know a couple other good locations too; each is about 15 miles away, one north and one south. Those will be backups in case the first location doesn't pan out for whatever reason, but it should not be a problem. I've practiced there several times, and cops patrolling the area have been okay with it every time (although I was either alone or with one other person).

If you come out, you are agreeing to not disclose the practice location(s) online (e.g., via forums, email, pics, video, etc.) Please use discretion. Clean, grippy lots where security doesn't kick us out are hard to come by!
