Still have some of these.  All are in bags, in a cabinet, in my garage.

Had a bit of a scare recently. Riding to work, a distracted lady turned left in front of me, then saw me at the last second, and, yup, froze in her tracks, stopping her SUV dead in front of me with about 60 feet of closing distance.

Luckily, it was on a small street near my office, so I wasn't going very fast, and was actually able to aim for the gap between her front wheel and fender to buy myself a few extra feet as I hauled on the brakes. Stopped without a substantial impact, with my front tire going into the gap, holding my bike up like it was in a wheel chock. Smashed my front fender, but that was really about it. Her insurance is paying for a new one.

Coulda been way worse, but I gave it a lot of thought. My wife is undergoing a lengthy recovery from surgery, making my income all we've got until she's well enough to work again. If I were unable to work due to that accident, we'd be screwed (yeah, we'd get a settlement down the road, probably). Plus, with the whole Coronavirus situation, people around my area are driving like zombies. This probably isn't the best time to go into a hospital with an injury because someone was more worried about their next roll of toilet paper than the other vehicles on the road.

As long as the roads are empty, and I can get to work just as fast in my car, I'm going to put the bikes on tenders until everyone chills out, or my wife is back to work.

Glad you're ok!  I agree that lately the traffic has been good enough for me to drive regularly.  Luckily the drivers on my route haven't been much different than normal.

Hope the wife recovers quickly.

Iíll share my thoughts.. probably going to cancel my AMA membership. Been paying for years, but have never needed roadside assistance until a few days ago. I stopped for coffee at the Orange Circle and came back out to the Bonneville, which chose that time to have a flat battery. I was in a hurry, and after I had no luck finding jumper cables among the sullen hipsters hanging around Urth and Starbucks, and no downward slope to get enough speed to bump start, I called AMA. They informed me that they donít provide jump start service but would be happy to tow my bike.

Really, rather send a flatbed than a jump box?

Anyone else ever try their roadside assistance?

I have, a few times:
Once b/c my Street Triple wouldn't start (bad crank position sensor) - got a tow from work to home (30 miles).
A couple of times for my daughter's car (wouldn't hold idle) - once from my house to our indy mechanic, then from his shop to the dealer (about 3 miles each time).
Once more b/c the Street Triple wouldn't start (new battery & no codes), 4 miles from my home to an indy shop.

While AMA might not send out someone specifically to jump the vehicle, often the tow truck driver will have cables and will try to jump it if the problem is just "it's not starting".

I had one like that a few years ago. Looked good, and I really liked that interior liner - it was excellent for maintaining a comfortable temp.  GLWS

Take the lot for $20...

I have an oil filter and a cabin air filter for a van which we sold before using the filters...will trade for beer or that free jacket

Should have the cast and crew sign the bike somewhere

Glad your employment situation is handled!

I have a love/hate relationship with the interchanges from 55N to 5S, and 5N to 55S - those are great when there is not traffic, but there's always traffic.

Misc / Re: Ride To Work Day - 6/18/18

I ended up taking my son to camp via 55 and 5, and there were more riders along that route than I remember seeing in the past.  (this was around 8:30am)

I have the day off, but hopefully I'll be able to ride a bit.

Off Topic / Any tech's to mentor a middle-schooler?
« on: 05/10/18 01:57PM »
Anyone have any leads on a tech / shop owner who might be willing to act as a mentor to an 8th-grader?  My kids' school has 8th graders work on "practical" projects, capping off towards the end of the school year with a presentation to the school community.  My daughter, who will be in 8th next year, has listed motorcycle maintenance & repair as one of her 3 requests (to be approved by faculty).  I will help her, but this isn't my profession and therefore I'm not sure that I can serve the mentor role.  If anyone has a lead (or leads), I'd appreciate a PM with their contact info.

Hmm.  I was considering some of the stuff he was advertising. Hopefully nothing bad happened to the OP.

Toll roads in LA County don't charge. Although every morning on 110 N, I see one or two people pulled over off the Express lanes.

I also agree with above, the worst traffic happens north of the 405 / 605: narrower lanes, dumb drivers unable to just maintain steady speed & consistent following distances, etc.

Would you consider it a light smoke at full tint?  It looks like the visor doesn't get as dark as the Shoei dark smoke visor.

I saw the OC Moto tweet yesterday and hoped it was fake news.  RIP Annette.
