General Motorcycle Discussion / new Honda BULLDOG

Thoughts? :17:
The liquid-cooled 4-stroke DOHC inline 2-cylinder 400cc engine has powerful, yet easy to handle output characteristics, realizing a nimble ride in a wide range of environments from urban to rural areas.

So many things make this video truly amazing:

Car lane splitting on freeway in heavy traffic
Rider kicking car almost falling off bike twice
Some random dudes and street vendors near concrete divider
Both sides of freeway going same direction
Pink backpack
Street Fighter VO

Fact that I don't understand a word they're saying makes whole thing look hilarious, though it probably not so funny for them, lol

Tales of the Road / ACH closure.
« on: 03/09/15 02:58PM »
Went to ACH 3-4 weeks ago, in the morning, westbound, it was closed.

Checked today, still closed. Anyone knows what's going on, is it really bad?

Hi Ocmoto!

I might happen to get a new job in Santa Monica soon, and that will require me to do 55 miles commute from Irvine on 405 freeway
Doing this in car without access to HOV might be too much for me, so most likely I'll be riding 2 wheels.
I'm sure there are people here who did this on regular basis, so I'd appreciate any tips and cool stories from you guys.

What's the best time to commute in the morning and after work?
How long it usually takes? How much time you save compared to average car?
How rush hour cagers are in general, are they alert of motorcycles? Any road rage?
Most important, riding after sunset - anything I should be prepared for specifically?

P.S. I heard some rumors they might add express lanes somewhere between OC and LA, is this legit?

General Motorcycle Discussion / Riderscan mirror

Found this interesting thing in someone's motovlog

kinda pricey, anyone has anything to say against using this mirror?
I am, for example, tired of vehicles and other motorcycles jumping on me from blind spots just because I can't keep an eye on the mirrors all the time. This scan mirror could help to be more alert on the multi-lane roads.

Off Topic / Ingress (game)
« on: 09/02/14 03:27PM »
Hey OCmoto folks, I'd like to tell you about this cool game, Ingress, that has been around for 2 years on android phones, and recently got ported over to iPhones.
To simply put, it's an urban exploration RPG game, with 2 factions pursuing territory control. Better description from Wikipedia:
Ingress is an augmented reality massively multiplayer online role playing GPS-dependent game[4] created by Niantic Labs, a startup within Google, originally for Android devices,[5] and since July 14, 2014 for Apple's iOS.[3] The game has a complex science fiction back story with a continuous open narrative.[6][7]

The gameplay consists of establishing "portals" at places of public art, landmarks, cenotaphs, etc., and linking them to create virtual triangular fields over geographic areas. Progress in the game is measured by the number of Mind Units, i.e. people, nominally controlled by each faction (as illustrated on the Intel Map).[8][9] The necessary links between portals may range from meters to kilometers, to hundreds of kilometers in operations of considerable logistical complexity.[10] International links and fields are not uncommon, as Ingress has attracted an enthusiastic following in cities worldwide[11] amongst both young and old,[12] to the extent that the gameplay is itself a lifestyle for some, including tattoos.[2]

I've been playing for few days, only level 3, and it's a lot of fun. One thing for sure - this game really makes you go out and explore new places you'd never go otherwise. And being on a bike makes it even more interesting.

What it looks like on global map. Might be slow for the entire globe, so type your town name in search box and see for yourself.

OC area is relatively empty compared to some big cities

A really good video explanation of the game:

General Motorcycle Discussion / CENTR panoramic camera

Also on Kickstarter.

Pretty cool idea, I like it.
Didn't read full info yet, just watched video samples.
Few questionable things, like, reliable web support to host your files. Editing videos with classic software like Premiere.
How this thing holding up on top of the helmet and what happens when you put your visor up.

Was looking for nice camera for my helmet, found this one from Sony:
Looks good, sample videos can be found on this channel

Helmet mount:

Sony got a reputation for making good video chips and optics, so far this is my pick, but I'd like to hear your opinions first. Cons are: separate waterproof case, geniune accessories and mounts are few and expensive.

Other options are:

GoPro, everyone knows it, probably best camera on market with tons of accessories, but I don't like the shape, too massive in it's waterproof case

Drift , honestly didn't do any research, know nothing about it, I like it's compact design with waterproof shell. Also small display is neat but figured it's not necessary since other cameras can wirelessly connect to smartphone.

JVC Addixion looks very similar to Drift, it's relatively new, I know nothing about it.

ContourHD, that's the one I currently have, bought it 3.5 years ago and it clearly fails when compared to any cameras mentioned above - little features, poor low light quality, no steady shot, no 120 FPS, no wireless connectivity. Not to mention company is out of business. That's why I need to replace it.

Selling some of my gear (click for larger image)
located in Irvine, PM if interested for phone number and details.

Scorpion EXO 500 helmet
Like new, used for 1000 miles, liner washed and cleaned, no damage except 2 small scratches on left side (outlined on last pic). Comes with additional dark smoked visor.
Size - XXL. Selling because it's slightly tight for me even with cheekpads deflated. Got XXL Shoei 1100 instead, which fits me perfectly. So if you tried XXL Shoei and it's too large for you, this Scorpion might fit you just right. Or you can try it on in Mission Motorsports store before making a decision.
Asking $150, $170 if you want that dark visor.

Scorpion Torque textile jacket, size XL, hi-viz neon colors
Worn for 600 miles, never was under rain, never touched ground.
Original armor inserts were replaced with Forcefield shoulderpads and elbowpads, then I took them out to wear Alpinestars body protection under jacket. You can have them for free if you buy jacket. I'll try to find original armor pads, though they're softer and smaller.
Asking $100

Alpinestars Bionic 2 protection jacket. I believe it's XL.
Worn for 500 miles, very good condition. Fits perfectly under that scorpion jacket.
Asking $140

EVS Kneepads,
like new, worn few times. Stopped using them once I got motorrad pants with built in protection.
size LG

I had no idea this exist, from the video process looks so much easier than thick vinyl wrapping
Only problem is finding tub deep enough to submerge helmet shell or large bike part
Anyone knows if someone does this around OC?

checked prices of equipment...nope

Hey guys, need some help here.

Went to my dealership to get first service done, that includes oil change, filter, valves adjustments and something else. Guy at the counter said they'd charge $450, isn't that too much? What should I do?

This is first time I deal with this, so honestly have no idea if this is such a big thing.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

This time not one of those countless crash dashcam videos. Instead, good stories from the road, people being friendly, riders helping each other, good scenery, relaxing music.

Thought some here people might like it, enjoy :)

Hey guys, new rider here.

Went to mentioned parking lot to practice last weekends, since it's biggest one I could find in proximity. Saw some car driving school there same morning, found empty spot away from them.

However, this morning, I was approached by 2 guards on golf cart and they politely asked me to leave, "this is private parking lot". Is that right? Is there any way I can still ride there? They mentioned some insurance policy - just my regular insurance or something else? I was frustrated and forgot to ask what it is.

In case I can't ride there, are there any similar places around Irvine or Lake Forest where I could practice? Not really ready for the road.
